Why do dogs jump on people?
Dogs jump on people for several reasons, each linked to their natural instincts, emotional states, and learned behaviors:
Here are a few reasons why dogs jump:
1. They get excited and want to greet you.
From the time they are puppies we bring them home and they get used to being near our faces for affection, so we train them that it is a good thing. They may be looking to connect with us.
2. They may be showing some dominance.
Dogs like to assert themselves by putting their bodies on each other. They play hard they, they wrestle with each other and they may want to do the same with us
3. Some may have anxiety.
Your dog may not be comfortable with their surroundings and may not know what to do, but at least they can “hug” you.
When we start training with our dogs, the first thing we address is the lack of impulse control. Every time the dog jumps on us, we walk into them, so they can back up. We reward four on the floor. When our dog jumps off of us on to the floor, we will praise and reward that behavior.
